A Favorite Fiber and Fabric

Hemp is a T Shirt Atelier favorite sustainable clothing fiber because of its many environmental benefits now and into the future…it is widely considered the most sustainable and oldest clothing fabric on Earth.

Hemp is one of the oldest human fabrics in the world.  Early records of its use as a woven material date back 26,900 BC in Eastern Europe; and the oldest evidence of hemp fabric has been traced back to 8000 BC in the Middle East.

Hemp is rapidly gaining significant recognition as a sustainable, durable, and versatile clothing fabric.  Its use for apparel has increased dramatically because of consumer demand for sustainable fashion.

Hemp is considered a nearly perfect sustainable fiber for the following reasons:

-Low Environmental Impact: Hemp requires less water than other fibers; and thrives without pesticides, herbicides, or fungicides.

-High Yield & Efficiency: Hemp is a high yielding crop because it produces over double the fiber per hectare compared to cotton.

-Soil Regeneration: Hemp has deep roots which prevents soil erosion and replaces the nutrients it consumes. While requiring an increased amount of nitrogen, it can be grown on the same land for 14 years without depleting the soil.

-Carbon-Negative: Hemp absorbs more carbon dioxide per acre than any other agricultural crop, aiding in climate change mitigation.

-Durability: Hemp fabric is three times stronger than cotton, is resistant to mold and UV light, and breaks down (biodegrades) at the end of its lifecycle.

-Rapid Growth: Hemp matures quickly, in just 90 to 100 days, allowing for multiple, efficient harvests.

Hemp is considered a nearly perfect fabric for the following reasons:

-Extreme Durability & Strength: Hemp fibers are incredibly strong and do not stretch out of shape, making them ideal for long-lasting clothing.

-Superior Comfort & Health: Hemp is highly breathable and moisture-wicking, keeping the wearer cool. It is naturally antimicrobial, inhibiting odor-causing bacteria, and provides natural UV protection.

-Versatility & Texture: While initially stiff, hemp softens significantly with wear and washing.

-Environmental Benefits: Being a natural, plant-based fiber, it is fully biodegradable and does not shed microplastics into the ocean, unlike synthetic alternatives like polyester.
