July Is National Hemp Month
Posted on July 06 2023
The theme for National Hemp Month 2023 is “Exploring the Sustainable Future of Hemp.”
National Hemp Month, first observed in 2020, is an opportunity to rediscover hemp and its usefulness to people and the planet.
The history and general nature of hemp was written about in our December 2020 Journal: Fiber Files: Hemp. Along with bamboo, hemp is among the fastest growing plants on Earth. It was also one of the first plants to be spun into usable fiber.
Hemp is one of the world’s most useful, natural and eco-friendly fibers!
The type that is used for a wide variety of commercial products is called industrial hemp. Products include textiles, clothing, paper, rope, biodegradable plastics, insulation, shoes and other consumer goods.
During its crop growing period, the hemp plant is a carbon-negative plant which means that it is able to absorb more CO2, requires less water, and does not deplete the soil compared to other crops. As a fabric or textile it takes only weeks to biodegrade.
As a fabric, hemp has a similar texture to linen and becomes softer and more comfortable than cotton over time. With proper care, a garment made of hemp can last decades. It is not susceptible to shrinkage, and highly resistant to pilling. The plant has long and sturdy fibers which create a very soft and durable fabric. It also has versatile properties that help keep the body cooler during summer and warmer during winter; as well as its ability to block the sun's UV rays.
