National Sewing Machine Day
Posted on June 13 2025
June 13th honors the very first invention of the sewing machine and its significant impact on the textile industry and society.
This is specifically linked to the day in 1790 when English inventor Thomas Saint received the first patent for a sewing machine design. This was the first workable sewing machine invented and patented. Since then and to the present, there is a long history of ongoing designs and patents leading to improvements and the availability of a variety of sewing machines, which now include electronic and digital components.
The sewing machine is one of the most transformative inventions in textile history. It revolutionized how we create clothing, textiles, and other fabric goods, making it possible to create more complex and intricate clothing patterns and stitches at a scale and speed not possible by hand sewing.
Until the invention of the sewing machine, everything a person might wear or use in their home was sewn by hand. This process took a great deal of time, skill and patience. These items were considered among the most valuable items people owned, never wasted and treated with care.
Not only has the sewing machine made sewing clothes and other materials faster, it has also changed how people spend their time.
T Shirt Atelier celebrates the invention of the sewing machine and the innovative people involved in its further development.
